National Night Out – Save the Date!
Tuesday, October 6th

Save-the-Date: Tuesday, October 6th at Glenville Park.
More details to come in future newsletters!

National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to: (1) Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most cities and towns celebrate National Night Out with a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local officials and law enforcement, safety fairs, and youth events.

The City of Richardson competes in Category 2 (cities with pop. 100,000 – 299,000) for 1st place in the nation to highlight the great Police and community partnership in the fight against crime.

Small Business Spotlight

  This family-owned restaurant brings authentic Peruvian cuisine to our community, featuring favorites like fresh ceviche, lomo saltado, arroz chaufa, ají de gallina, and their signature pollo a la brasa cooked in a charcoal oven imported from Peru. Many of the dishes are designed for sharing, making it a great spot for family dinners or a night out with friends.

Tayta is a family venture led by Nidia Torres and her sons, Andreé and Diego Florez. Torres launched her catering business, María Elena, more than a decade ago, and in 2024 the family expanded with Tayta, a ghost kitchen operating out of Revolving Kitchen in Fairview.
The family’s culinary inspiration stems from extensive travels across Peru. A trip along the coast helped them refine their ceviche recipes, while journeying through the Peruvian Amazon introduced them to region-specific techniques like slow-smoking meats, cooking with jungle fish, and using indigenous root vegetables. These exploratory trips shaped their initial catering and ghost kitchen menus, which mirror the offerings at the new Richardson space.

The 60-seat restaurant was designed by Dearen and Torres, bringing a welcoming, modern vibe to the dining room that blends urban industrial architecture with playful, bohemian decor. Highlights include a mural of Cusco’s famous Rainbow Mountain painted by Dearen, artisanal touches handpicked by Torres, suspended lush greenery, and warm, woven rattan pendant lamps that fill the room with light.

Tayta is open daily from 11 am-8:30 pm Sunday-Thursday, 11 am-9 pm Friday, and 11 am-10 pm Saturday.

“We are doing this with so much love, and we love sharing our Peruvian heritage and flavors with the community,” Diego Florez says.

Monthly Engagement and Programs Update

Congratulations to our July winners of Yard of the Month!

First place is Claudia and Randy Wohlford at 807 Spring Valley.

Claudia and Randy earned this month’s top honor with a beautifully balanced landscape featuring vibrant flower beds surrounding the home, additional garden beds lining both sides of the walkway, and a lush, well-maintained lawn that truly stands out.

Runner-Up is Bruce and Joan Swim at 1100 Morningstar.

Bruce and Joan created a beautiful landscape with eye-catching oversized planters, lush ferns, colorful shrubs, and patriotic flags that add charm and personality to their home’s curb appeal.

If you would like to help and are not already on the team, please contact Robert Grinsfelder at Rmgrins@aol.com. It just takes one hour each month and a commitment for every month is not expected.

We also want to thank Bruce Miller Nursery for providing the gift cards awarded to the winner and runner-up each month from March through September.  We provide special gift cards for October and our holiday selection in December.

Let’s continue to get outside and make North College Park look great!

>>> Monthly Book Club

Our neighborhood book club is on indefinite hiatus. The previous hostesses are in busy life seasons and unable to continue handling logistics. If anyone is interested in taking over planning, let us know by emailing spateshannah@gmail.com.

>>> Crime Patrol Report

Please email Sid Weatherford at sidford01@gmail.com to join or attend monthly meetings! Our monthly dinner meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at Rocco’s Italian Grill at 6pm. Dinner and a visit with our Richardson Police Representative (when available) ir provided.

To participate in Crime Patrol, you can patrol as you feel led. One hour per month is the suggested service. Many patrollers use this time to walk with friends, their pets, or just enjoy time on their own knowing they’re doing their part to make the neighborhood safer.
