Snowmageddon 2021

Just when we thought the last year might be done battering us, Snowmageddon made its way to Texas and our community. Many were without consistent power for days and a small subset of our community on Rainbow and Windsong went without even longer until a fuse was fixed that supplied power to their homes. It was truly wonderful to be part of a community checking in on and supporting their neighbors even as many were struggling themselves. One of our Windsong residents, Twanda Williams, had this to say, “I would like to say thank you to all our neighbors for looking out for one another during these last few days.” What blessing it is to be part of NCPNA!

North College Park Paddy’s Day 5K Wrap-up

Our first ever neighborhood 5K was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who came and participated and a special thanks to April Anderson who managed the event from start to finish. We had over 40 participants and everyone had a great time. We will definitely do this again next year. Here are a few pictures from the event. Check out our Facebook page, website and the April Newsletter for an update and pictures from the event.

Again, this year we are partnering with the Rotary Club to offer a discount for the five flag placements with a paid membership. There has been a little confusion in that some of you may have received a renewal notice from the Richardson Flags Project for renewal. You can still renew your NCPNA membership and get the flags at a discount. If you have already renewed with the Rotary, we will be happy to grant you this discount with your paid membership. Membership is $25, membership with the flag option is $55.

The process is easy, just go to our website and pay for your membership and if you wish, the flag option for only $30 more. The address is http://ncpna.org/join. You may pay online or mail a check to the address provided.

Thanks for supporting North College Park Neighborhood Association.

If you want a “booster” sign, please let Vicki Bean V.Bean@att.net know and we will get you a sign.

March/April Book Club

Our February book club was scheduled a bit too close to Snowmaggedon, so we postponed it to March 9th. We met over Zoom to discuss “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah. It was a heart wrenching tale of Texas during the Great Depression and one of the best book club discussions we’ve had so far. Our next meeting is Tuesday April 27th at 7:30pm with location TBD and we will be reading “Negroland: A Memoir” by Margo Jefferson. Email April Anderson at adawn0105@gmail.com if you’d like to join!

Yard of the Month

Yard of the month is back! Our judges have scoured the neighborhood and made some very difficult choices, here are the results:

Runner Up, Christine and Gary McGinty, 1105 Horizon. They received a $25 gift certificate from Bruce Miller Nursery.

Winner, Robert and Lisa Grinsfelder, 1003 Rainbow. They received a $25 gift certificate from Bruce Miller Nursery.

Small Business Spotlight

Pineda’s Mexican Cuisine, located at Plano and Arapaho Rd, is a family owned and operated business offering authentic Mexican cuisine using only fresh ingredients. During the pandemic, Pineda’s has continued to offer and deliver delicious food and beverages to residents of this and surrounding local communities. If you need a recommendation, try the fajitas Pineda style and add on a margarita of any flavor to tame the heat! Delivery, curbside, and pick-up are all available. They will continue to wear masks and follow CDC guidelines for all of their services. https://pinedasmexican.com/

If you have a small business you want to highlight, please email April Anderson at adawn0105@gmail.com for consideration. We want to support you!

Crime Watch Report

We met with our police crime prevention officer Raul Reyes and he reported that we had not incidents in the last month. This is really good news. He told us that in recent months theft of tools and equipment from service vehicle has become a problem. If you work in the trades or know people who do, remind them to lock their vehicles and store them in a secure location. Stay alert, if you see activity in the neighborhood which does not feel right, call 911. We can always use additional crime patrol volunteers, on foot or in your vehicle. Contact our crime patrol coordinator for more information. Doug Freeman at d1004free@aol.com

House Number Project

The city requires that all homes have clearly visible house numbers both front and back. Many homes are depending on curb lettering which have faded. This makes it difficult to identify a house for emergency services and deliveries. We encourage everyone to check and make sure the numbers are clearly visible in both the back and the front of the residence.

For several years NCPNA has volunteers who make house number signs for the rear of houses. This a free service, all you need do is to contact Doug Freeman at d1004free@aol.com to arrange for it to be installed.

The Network of Community Ministries

Food donations and volunteers are sorely needed to help in our community. More information

About North College Park Neighborhood Association

NCPNA is a neighborhood association and, unlike a homeowner’s association, we do not have any authority over anyone’s property. We sponsor activities and projects to help make our neighborhood a more pleasant and safe place to live. Volunteers are always needed, and we look forward to hearing about new ways to achieve our collective goals.

Contact Robert Grinsfelder at rmgrins@aol.com if you can help with any of these activities.
